چکیده

The condition number of a Gram matrix defined by a polynomial basis and a set of points is often used to measure the sensitivity of the polynomial approximation. Given a polynomial basis, we consider the problem of finding a set of points and/or weights which minimizes the condition number of the Gram matrix. We use smoothing methods to solve such minimization problems and show the global convergence of smoothing methods. To illustrate applications of minimizing the condition number, we report numerical results for the Gram matrix defined by the weighted Vandermonde-like matrix for least squares polynomial approximation on an interval, and the Gram matrix defined by an orthonormal set of real spherical harmonics for interpolation on the sphere.

Minimizing the Condition Number of a Positive Deenite Matrix by Completion

We consider the problem of minimizing the spectral condition number of a positive deenite matrix by completion: minfcond(positive deeniteg; where A is an n n Hermitian positive deenite matrix, B a p n matrix and X is a free p p Hermitian matrix. We reduce this problem to an optimization problem for a convex function in one variable. Using the minimal solution of this problem we characterize the...

Minimizing the Condition Number for Small Rank Modifications

We consider the problem of minimizing the condition number of a low rank modification of a matrix. Analytical results show that the minimum, which is not necessarily unique, can be obtained and expressed by a small number of eigenpairs or singular pairs. The symmetric and the nonsymmetric cases are analyzed, and numerical experiments illustrate the analytical observations.

Preconditioned Generalized Minimal Residual Method for Solving Fractional Advection-Diffusion Equation

Introduction Fractional differential equations (FDEs)  have  attracted much attention and have been widely used in the fields of finance, physics, image processing, and biology, etc. It is not always possible to find an analytical solution for such equations. The approximate solution or numerical scheme  may be a good approach, particularly, the schemes in numerical linear algebra for solving ...

Minimizing the condition number of a positive definite matrix by completion

We consider the problem of minimizing the spectral condition number of a positive definite matrix by completion: min{cond( [ A BH B X ] ) : [ A BH B X ] positive definite}, where A is an n × n Hermitian positive definite matrix, B a p × n matrix and X is a free p× p Hermitian matrix. We reduce this problem to an optimization problem for a convex function in one variable. Using the minimal solut...
